Nigerian Players Abroad Over The Weekend


In France, Josh Maja was on target as Girondis Bordeaux recorded a 1-1 away draw against Saint-Etienne in their French Ligue 1 clash at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on Sunday. Maja has now scored five goals in 21 league appearances for Bordeaux this season.

Maja’s international teammate, Samuel Kalu also started the game, but he was replaced by Hwang Ui-jo 18 minutes from time. Kalu has only scored one goal in 20 league games for Bordeaux this season.


Victor Osimhen played entire duration in Lille’s 1 – 0 win over Lyon in their Ligue 1 clash on Sunday night. Former Chelsea striker, Loic Remy scored the only goal on the match in the 33rd minute.


In the Spanish LaLiga, Mildfilder Oghenekaro Etebo was in action for 70 minutes in the Getafe’s goalless draw with Celta Vigo. Etebo was replaced by Kenedy in the 70th minute of action.


It was the battles of Nigerians as Samuel Chukwueze faced Kenneth Omeruo and Chidozie Awaziem as Villarreal lost 1 – 2 at home to Leganes.
Chukwueze came on in the 66th minute for Villarreal, as Kenneth Omeru also came on at the same time for Leganes.
However, Chidozie Awaziem was on for the entire duration.

In the Premier League, Odion Ighalo replaced Bruno Fernandes with two minutes remaining in the Manchester Derby as United beat City 2-0 on Sunday.
It was his seventh appearance for United since joining them on loan from Chinese Super League club Shanghai Shenhua.


In the Championship, Super Eagles defender Leon Balogun made his sixth appearance for Wigan in their 0-0 home draw against Luton Town in Saturday, and helped Wigan recorded their fourth straight clean sheets.

The draw saw Wigan stretch their unbeaten streak to six games since their last defeat which was on February 2nd.


Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi was also in action for West Bromwich Albion in their 0-0 draw at Swansea. The draw saw West Bromwich relinquish top spot on the Championship table to Leeds United.


In the Turkish Super Lig, striker Olarenwaju Kayode netted a crucial equaliser for Gaziantep FK in the 53rd minute as they were held to a 1-1 draw by a Trabzonspor side containing John Obi Mikel and Anthony Nwakaeme.

He has now contributed 16 goals (9 goals, 7 assists) from 23 appearances in all competitions this season for Gaziantep FK.


In Holland, Super Eagles new boy, Cyriel Dessers missed from the spot as his 6th minute spotkick hit the woodwork. But Heracles Almelo came from two goals down to to beat Waalwijk 4-2 in their Eredivisie clash on Sunday.
