Mourinho: The only time I cried after a defeat as a coach in my career
Tottenham manager, Jose Mourinho says the saddest moment of his career was when he was knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich in 2012.
Jose Mourinho revealed that the only time he shed tears after a defeat was when Real Madrid lost on penalties to Bayern Munich. Mourinho admitted he cried after the match.
He also stated that the elimination to Bayern Munich while with Real Madrid as the lowest point of his career, as the penalty shoot-out defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu sent his team out of the Champions League in the semi-finals.
Mourinho said: “Unfortunately, that’s football. Cristiano, Kaka, Sergio Ramos… three complete monsters of football, there’s no doubt about that, but they’re also human.
“That night is the only time in my career as a coach that I’ve cried after a defeat. I remember it well…
I pulled up in front of my house, in the car, crying… It was very hard because we were the best that season.”
That night, Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and
Sergio Ramos missed from the penalty spot as Madrid fell to Bayern on penalties in the 2012 semi-finals.
While responding in an interview on a Portuguese television channel, Mourinho also said, ” If I have to choose the worst moment, it’s that elimination with Real Madrid.
“We were the best team in Europe, without a doubt, we won LaLiga smashing all the records for points and goals and we would have won that final, I don’t have any doubt.
“What was most bad for me was in the shoot-out we chose Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Sergio Ramos , they were dead certain from the penalty spot and the guys who missed were those who never miss, it sunk me.”
After that, Mourinho lasted just 12 months more at Real Madrid before returning to his former club Chelsea.
